A vehicle towing a livestock trailer was involved in an incident in the early hours of Friday morning on the M1 motorway near Junction 6 Balbriggan.
At approximately 3.10am, the trailer became disconnected from the vehicle, according to gardaí. No other vehicles were involved and the driver, a man in his late teens, was uninjured.
The trailer contained a number of calves at the time. Three calves have died as a result of the incident.
A section of the motorway was closed for a period while gardaí carried out an examination at the scene and the road has since reopened.
