THEATRE

Copper Face Jacks: The Musical

5 July: Dublin’s favourite culchie hub Copper Face Jacks has been transformed into a musical at the Olympia Theatre. Written by Ross O’Carroll Kelly creator Paul Howard, the love story sees a Kerry girl who has moved up to the big smoke fall in love with a Dublin GAA player. The language barrier doesn’t get in the way, but their county colours provide a bit of tension. It will run until 12 August at the Olympia Theatre. See www.ticketmaster.ie.

FILM

Swimming with Men

6 July: Going through a mid-life crisis means buying a red convertible or wearing tight leather pants, right? This is not the case in Swimming with Men where accountant Eric (played by Welsh actor Rob Brydon) joins an all-male synchronised swim team during a time of confusion and crisis in his life. A bond quickly forms between the members as they train to compete in the world championships in Milan. A tale of synchronisation and middle-aged men in Speedos seems to be a truly lethal combination.

Mary Shelley

6 July: This movie explores the romantic relationship between Mary Shelley neé Wollstonecraft Godwin, author of Frankenstein, and poet Percy Shelley. Elle Fanning stars as Mary, while Douglas Booth plays her love interest, Percy. Tied by their radical ideas and natural chemistry, the pair run away together. It is during this time that Mary is challenged to write a ghost story, which results in Frankenstein. Filled with romance, drama and the fascinating life of a young writer, Mary Shelley appears to be a worthy watch for a spooky Friday night.
