At the National Economic Dialogue in Dublin Castle last week, Macra na Feirme president James Healy said: ‘‘Improving rural broadband and developing policies that support generational renewal, farm succession and land mobility are essential to position Irish farming for a sustainable and progressive future.’’

The purpose of the forum was to determine how the upcoming Budget 2018 can best be used to help the interests of everyone nationally.

Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe was in attendance along with representatives from every sector in Ireland.

The dialogue was not intended to produce specific budget proposals; instead, it is aimed at helping organisations when preparing their own pre-budget submissions.

Climate change was high on the agenda as was the need to invest in infrastructure with several bodies airing their views on these issues, although the Minister for Finance warned that ‘‘the State cannot deliver all the things people are looking for’’.

Speaking afterwards, Healy said: ‘‘The forum was a good opportunity for Macra na Feirme to state what our priorities are, and what supports should be provided to reach those goals. These include access to innovative models of finance, competitive measures and tackling volatility. Funding for youth services and progressing Ireland 2040 plans and actions for rural Ireland are also a must.’’
