Woodco, a manufacturer of renewable energy equipment in Donaskeigh, Co Tipperary, received the best product prize for its biogenic processor at the Green Awards in Dublin on Tuesday.

The machine is a self-contained combined heat and power generator running on organic waste containing up to 35% moisture.

"The portable biogenic processor is customised to treat agricultural residues, such as mushroom compost or chicken litter, through a process called pyrolysis," Woodco sales manager Jane Foley told the Irish Farmers Journal.

"The outputs, such as biochar, which can be used as a soil amendment, are safe, reusable, sustainable and beneficial for human health and the environment."

Technical director Declan Crosse said that the biogenic processor could treat 13kg DM of material per hour and had an output of 100kW heat and 4kW electricity, with plans to increase this to 8kW.

"In May, we begin trials on a local mushroom farm where we aim to provide all his heating requirements from his own spent mushroom and use the electrical generation to offset some of the power coming from the grid," Crosse said.

Woodco is planning to start selling the machine at the end of this year.
