Last Tuesday’s sheep sale at Carnaross Mart saw another firm trade for lambs. With factories attempting to pull quotes, those in attendance on the day were happy to see continued firm trade for lambs.

Numbers were not overly big, but with more and more farmers focusing on keeping the cost of production down, more and more mid-season lambs are being produced in the region on less early lambs.

The majority of those from 42kg to 44kg sold mainly from €110 to €115/head.

Factory agents were present and active for all good-quality slaughter-fit lambs, while the heavy lambs were backed by firm demand from butchers and wholesalers who were actively sourcing on the day also.

Prices for heavy lambs ranged mainly from €120 to a top of about €125.

The number of cast or cull ewes on offer remains very low, but demand is solid where they are on offer.

Earlier in the spring there was a good share of ewes with lambs at foot, but again, at this stage, the numbers of these are becoming very low.

Clearance sales will being again from July onwards at the mart.

Commission rates are €1 to the buyer and €1 to €2.50 to the seller.
