The influx of numbers and increased number of cattle having to be housed has meant that prices have begun to ease back for steers in marts across the country.

Monday’s sale in Mid-Tipp Mart, Thurles, attracted over 900 cattle, the majority of these being light stores.

Heifers performed much stronger than the steers

Nearly 300 of these stores fit between the 400kg and 500kg mark. Numbers were fairly static on the week, but the average price dropped by 6c/kg to settle at €1.85/kg.

Those better-quality lots were on par, but the lower end of lots saw a dramatic drop of 15c/kg.

Heavier steers

Heavier steers held that bit better, with short-keep lots from 500kg to 600kg level on the week, while fit cattle were down just 3c/kg.

Numbers of lighter steers nearly doubled on the week, with prices tumbling hard.

On average, steers weighing between 350kg and 400kg sold for €1.70/kg - back 23c/kg on the week.

Heifers performed much stronger than the steers, although these numbers weren’t as high.

Light heifers rose by 2c/kg to settle at €1.87/kg.

Moving up to over-400kg heifers, prices rose by 6c/kg on the week with an average of €1.89/kg. The top third of these lots saw the average price rise by 17c/kg on the week.

Short-keep heifers in excess of 500kg proved in very strong demand, but this was for very small numbers forward. In total, 19 sold to average €2.12/kg, up 39c/kg on the week.
