The downpour of rain wasn’t enough to deter exhibitors and spectators from staying around till late evening at Strokestown Show last weekend to find out who would be crowned supreme Irish Angus champion for 2018.

Given the task of the judging the prestigious event was Charlestown, Co Mayo, breeder Pat Murphy, who runs the Lecarrow herd.

After a strenuous few hours of judging, some parts in torrential rain, Pat eventually tapped out his overall champion as Mayo Karin from Gerry Kilgallon, Claremorris.

This five-year-old homebred cow has only been shown a few times, but has emerged victorious in all outings. Sired by former stock bull Westellen Dekay Granslam, she also features Deveron Latimer and Priestown Tornado in her pedigree.

Shown alongside her January-born bull calf, Karin was a firm favourite among spectators. On getting to the overall championship, Karin also won the senior cow class and the senior female championship.

Securing the female and overall junior championships, and in turn the reserve supreme title, was Bridgehouse Ria.

Having purchased the dam Currycramp Joan as an in-calf heifer from the Mulligan family, the first calf she produced was Ria.

Sire behind the reserve supreme champion is stock sire for the Currycramp herd, Northern Ireland bull Baronagh Producer.

The Mulligan family was also in the limelight, picking up the junior and senior male championships.

The junior title went to Clooncarne Rommel. This April 2018-born bull calf was again sired by Baronagh Producer, while the dam is Clooncarne Frank daughter Currycramp Kim. This bull placed third at the Aldi ABP championships two weeks ago.

Clooncarne Frank was the Mulligan family’s senior male champion. He is a direct son of Clooncarne Frank, while the dam is Currycramp Elana.

Reserve senior male championship honours went the way of John and Cathy Farrell, Curraghroe, Co Roscommon.
