Why and when did you set up your business?

I rediscovered my love of painting during lockdown; then I began to experiment with candle painting and really loved it.

I got such a positive reaction from family and friends that I knew other people would like them too.

What process do you use to create your products?

I hand-paint intricate designs on to candles using water-based non-toxic paint. I prefer to design directly on to the candles: painting on wax can be tricky, what you draw on paper can end up looking very different.

What is your most popular piece?

My 'spring garden' candle in ivory is a favourite. I think the appeal is in the simplicity of the bright florals, they look pretty on any table or mantelpiece.

It helps that the current interior trends are for dinner candles and florals.

I’ve found a way to marry both. Most of my candles are inspired by nature and botany.

I live near the Botanic Gardens and it’s a great source of inspiration to me throughout the seasons.

What is it about your business that brings you joy?

This business allows me to play to my strengths. I’m able to use my previous experience in art, visual merchandising and interior design in a way that I would never have expected.

Also, I can be true to myself. I really love my candles; I don’t paint any designs I wouldn’t be proud to sell.

What are your hopes for your business for 2022?

Now that the country has opened up again, I’m beginning to receive bespoke orders for weddings and birthdays.

I would also love to run workshops. My work is very solitary, so it would be nice to meet new people.

What is the best piece of advice you would give a start-up business?

It’s a cliché, but if you’ve got an idea, just get started. The things you don’t know now, you will figure out as you go.
