Ornua is one of the two Irish companies to travel with EU Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan on a trade mission to Mexico and Colombia this week. The aim of the visit is to open up new markets for EU agri food products in both countries.

Ornua will only visit Mexico on the trip, while Irish co-op Aurivo will visit both countries.

With the second-largest market in the world for casein, Mexico offers an attractive new market opportunity for Ornua to start supplying protein milk powders.

The company has been trading with Mexico since 1989, supplying dairy products to mainly the government and private companies.

Casein

A representative from Ornua told the Irish Farmers Journal that this visit was a great opportunity for the company to sell “a range of protein milk powders”.

“With a population of 120 million, dairy demand is increasing by 2% to 3% annually in Mexico. It is estimated that the country will import 70% of dairy by 2030.

“Mexico is the second-largest casein market in the world. With the ongoing growth of its cheese market, it’s a great opportunity,” they said.

According to Ornua, Ireland will eventually supply 25% of Mexico’s total casein.

Currently, 90% of dairy trade is under free trade in Mexico, with 50% of this coming from the US.

Aurivo

Irish co-op Aurivo is also participating in the trade mission – to both Mexico and Columbia. A delegation of 34 companies and producer organisations from 14 EU member states are accompanying the Commissioner on the trip.

75% of Aurivo’s current milk pool is exported, predominantly in the form of enriched milk powder, to almost 50 countries globally.

“Participating in the trade mission provides further opportunity to build customer relationships and develop new markets for Irish dairy. With growing GDP rates and a combined population of over 170 million, exploring new routes to market for our members’ milk is always a priority,” a company representative told the Irish Farmers Journal.

Aurivo currently produces product for markets as diverse as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria and the Middle East amongst many others.
