Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue has secured additional teaching posts in light of strong demand for places on green cert courses.

“I am delighted to have secured these crucial teaching posts for Teagasc to help roll out the level 5 and level 6 green cert course,” the Minister said.

“I sought the sanction for the recruitment by Teagasc of up to 20 temporary teachers to provide green certificate training, primarily in the northwest and northeast.

“I thank my colleague Minister Michael McGrath in the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform for granting this sanction.

“I also thank Teagasc director Professor Gerry Boyle for proactive engagement in the matter.”

Previous to this, the Irish Farmers Journal reported that there was a scramble for places on green cert courses.

Historically, there has also been more demand for places in times of economic downturn or depression when many young people return to a family farm when jobs are in short supply.

This would tally with the recent unemployment figures released.
