The latest monthly report from Met Éireann shows that rainfall across the country was above average for February.

Moorepark, Co Cork, which is also home to a Teagasc research farm, was particularly badly hit, with 38mm of rain recorded on February 23.

This marked the highest daily fall for February since 2007.

The report noted there were variations across the country.

“The number of rain days ranged from 17 days at Malin Head, Co Donegal to 25 days at both Roche's Point, Co Cork and Cork Airport, Co Cork. The number of wet days ranged from 13 days at a few stations to 20 days at Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry,” Met Éireann's report reads.

Land is currently saturated in most parts of the country, although some farmers have started to let stock out of winter housing.

Many farmers are still cautious though, as the according to the Farmers' Almanac, if March weather “comes in like a lamb” it’s likely to go out “like a lion”.

Many farmers will remember that this time three years ago the 'beast from the east' brought huge volumes of snow, bread shortages, fodder shortages and power outages.
