Despite the adverse weather, a large crowd turned up to the Christmas fatstock show and sale in Carrick-on-Shannon which saw a strong turnout of exporters compete with active bidding from farmers to generate a brisk trade around the ring. Almost 200 cattle sold, with a particularly buoyant trade for weanlings, especially for those with potential for further showing.

The top price of the sale at €4,000 was achieved twice for two weanling heifers. First up was a Limousin cross, weighing 434kg, exhibited by Richard O’Beirne, Tuam, Co Galway, followed by another Limousin heifer, this time weighing 325kg, also making €4,000 for owner Michelle Tarpey, Carrow, Elphin, Co Roscommon. More than 120 weanling heifers sold under the hammer, with a number of fancy prices paid for stylish lots. These included €2,970 to Phelim McCallion, Carndonagh, Co Donegal, for a 321kg BB cross; €2,850 to Martin Killeen, Mullagh, Ennis, Co Clare, for a 397kg Charolais cross and €2,720 for another Charolais heifer, this time weighing 307kg, also exhibited by Martin. Patrick Gaughan, Davitt Street, Foxford, Co Mayo, took home €2,700 for his 273kg Limousin heifer.

Top price for weanling bulls at €2,500 went to Brian and Mary Faughnan, Clooncarne, Bornacoola, Co Leitrim, for their 420kg Charolais cross, while Patrick Kenny, Ardagh, Riverstown, Co Sligo, got €2,400 for his Belgian Blue, weighing 390kg.

Beef and breeding heifers sold to €2,770 for a 593kg Charolais cross heifer exhibited by Peter MacNamara, while a Simmental cross weighing 508kg, owned by JP and N McPadden, Co Offaly, made €2,700. Others included €2,600 for a 590kg Limousin cross owned by David Gibbons, Caggle, Strokestown, Co Roscommon; €2,500 to John Gormley, Elphin for a 652kg Charolais cross; €2,300 for a 512kg Simmental cross owned by Victor Barber and €2,280 to Harvey O’Brien, Brize, Claremorris, Co Mayo, for a 582kg Limousin cross.

The top beef bullock price of €2,680 went to John O’Grady, Creggane, Glenamaddy, Co Galway, for a Charolais cross weighing a cool 1,160kg. Other prices included €2,650 for a 1,028kg Charolais cross owned by Brian Dyer, Claremorris; €2,620 to Francis Lyons, Easkey, Co Sligo, for a 1,005kg Belgian Blue bullock and €2,600 to Aidan and Eamon O’Donovan, Cappamore, Co Limerick, for a Limousin bullock weighing 790kg.
