Aside from all the new grass machinery demonstrated at last week’s FTMTA Grass & Muck, there was also a sizeable demonstration of dung-spreaders.

The range of machines now available on the market for spreading farmyard manure is impressive. Most dung-spreaders demonstrated on the day used a chain and slat design for moving material towards the rear of the machine where it was obliterated by vertical-beaters rotating at high speed. Below we take a look at the machines we saw working.

The Teagle Titan 10

The Teagle Titan 10 Manufactured in the Cornwall, England, has 10m3 capacity. The 7.8m long machine weights 5,210kg empty and minimum power requirement is 105hp. Heaped capacity when greedy boards are fitted is 12.4m3. A hydraulically raised slurry door prevents material falling through the machine's vertical beaters when on the road. Full-width floor chains draw material to the vertical beaters, whose tips overlap for complete material shredding and spreading. The driveline underneath the machine is shielded and all lubrication points are at ground level.

Perard CE 150-L

One of the larger machines demonstrated was from French company Perard. The CE 150-L has a 15m3 capacity. Internal length is 5.4m and its sides are 1.2m. Fully laden the machine weighs 16t. Two 14mm chains move material rearwards to the vertical beaters. On 650/75 R32 wheels, load height is 2.45m. A hinged slurry which is raised on external hydraulic rams is also fitted. Floor-chain speed is adjusted electrically from the cab of the tractor.

Agrispread AS10000

According to Agrispread, the AS10000 has a 10t capacity or 7.5m3. Minimum power requirement is 100hp. Floor drive to the 16mm grade 80 chains is through a hydraulic motor. The machine weighs 4,650kg’s empty with each rotor rotating at 380 RPM. 580/70 R38 BKT wheels tyres and hydraulic brakes are standard. A vertical lifting slurry door is also fitted to prevent material falling out when not spreading.

Conor rear-discharge dung spreader

Conor rear discharge dung spreader Manufactured in Tubber, Co. Clare, the rear discharge dung spreader from Conor comes in 8m3, 10m3 and 12m3 sizes. It is fitted with vertical beaters and hydraulic slurry door. A torque-clutch and wide angle PTO are standard equipment as are galvanised upper and lower front panels.

Marshall VES 1500

Marshall VES 1500 The 15t capacity machine is different from the other machines demonstrated as it doesn’t use floor chains but rather a horizontal hydraulic ram to force material rearwards towards the vertical beaters. According to Irish importers Johnston Farm equipment from Longford, the spreader has been designed to eliminate problematic floor chain setups and associated maintenance. The pushing ram’s speed is fully controllable due to the mechanical device that regulates the flow. Other advantages over traditional rear-discharge spreaders include the removal of a chain drive system, which allows a deeper more compact design that has a lower centre of gravity. This makes it an ideal choice for areas with narrow roads or for spreading on hills.

Metal-Fach N276 Falcon

Metal-Fach N276 Falcon Imported by Cork based Egmont Agri, the Metal-Fach dung spreader is a relatively new machine on the market. The machine demonstrated has a 9.5m3 capacity. When 600mm greedy boards are added, capacity rises to 15.3m3. According to Metal-Fach minimum power requirement is 90hp. The machine is also fitted with a sprung-drawbar, slurry door, 14mm floor chains and vertical-beaters. Depending on material spread width is between 8 and 12m. Spread rate is controlled by hydraulic adjustment of the floor-chain speed.
