The Mulligan and Parke families took home the big prizes at the Irish Aberdeen Angus national calf show at the showgrounds in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, on Saturday.

There were nearly 70 calves catalogued and the judge was Dallas Allen of the Stouphill herd in Northumberland. While a relatively new herd, it has progressed massively in a short period of time and produced a bull which was purchased by Irish AI centre Dovea Genetics last February.

He found his male champion in the form of the Mulligan family’s Clooncarne Rossiter. This November 2018-born bull is sired by Westellen Diego and goes back to a homebred dam by Clooncarne Frank. The Mulligans are coming off a strong year of showing, including taking the overall junior championship at this year’s Tullamore Show.

The reserve male spot went to the second prize-winner of the same class Drumbeera Everest U241. This bull was also born November 2018 and claimed a number of top accolades during the summer. Sired by Caulry Nationwide, this bull was bred by Thomas and Patrick Beirne but was secured not too long ago by breeder Albert DeCogan.

In the female championship, Dallas tapped forward Coolermoney Rosita V924 as the overall champion. Bred by the northern Ireland-based Parke family, this heifer was reserve junior champion at this year’s Clogher Valley show. Sired by Aynho Rossiter Eric, the March 2018-born heifer is out of a homebred dam by Coneyisland Legend. Standing reserve female champion was Molloy Sheena from Brian Faughan. Born January 2019, she is a daughter of Rawburn Enigmatic and out of a Rosemead Karona-bred dam.

The Northern Irish Coolermoney herd also collected two other first rosettes. Their April 2019-born heifer calf Coolermoney Lady Heather V935 took first place in the young heifer class. This one is out of the 30,000gns Netherton Figo, while the dam goes back to Jerusalem Walk On. In the January to February-born bull calf class, Coolermoney Ranger V902 emerged victorious. This bull is a son of Blackbanner of Idvies and out of a homebred dam by Laheens Eugene.

Winners

In the other classes, there were winners from Cork, Leitrim, Cavan and Sligo. Taking the first class of the day were John and Kate Tait, Midleton, Co Cork. Their September 2018-born bull Westellen Black Bush took top position while his pen mate Westellen Rocky settled for second. Black Bush is a son of Bova Lord Bonanza, while the dam is out of Cheeklaw Eirwyn.

Cork was also top in the second class when Albert and Jennifer De Cogan secured first place with the October 2018-born heifer Mogeely Pru U600. This daughter of three-time all-Ireland champion Rosemead Karona is out of the 20,000gns Cheeklaw Pru S541.

In the next heifer class for heifers born from 1 November 2018 to 31 December 2018, Tom Reynolds came out on top with Knockadrinan Rudie. This daughter of stock bull Drumgowna Norman has won numerous rosettes on the show circuit this year.

Michael and Barry Smith claimed a red rosette with their February 2019-born bull Lawsonsford Lord Hennesy V433. This stylish, well-shaped bull is sired by the herd’s former stock bull Friarstown Evolver.

In the last male class of the day, Sligo breeder Bernard Kerins secured the top placing with his stylish young bull Kerins Sparker. This April 2019-born bull is a son of Rawburn Black Hawk and out of the Lawsonsford Bagatelle-bred cow Kerins Jasmine.
