I farm: “70 head of pedigree Limousin cattle in Larne with my father Ian senior. We get on well and have a small engineering business on farm as well. We own 30 acres and rent 40 acres. The land would be pretty heavy.”

Lung transplant: “I’m 34 and I was born with cystic fibrosis. I had a double lung transplant in August 2014 in Newcastle, England. It changed my life. I’m up early and out working, whereas before I could only handle up to 10-minute periods out on the farm.”

Limousins: “I have a few Simmentals but I think there’s a great future in Limousins. They need to focus on maternal abilities like ease of calving and having milky cows. We have bought cattle from France before, but we’re in the middle of an embryo programme at the moment and we’re flushing a cow. I think one of the main benefits of Limousins is that they can suit part-time farmers.”

Showing: “I’ve been showing since I was no height. I love it! Last May, in Ballymena, we were show champion, and we’ve a couple going this year so we’d be hopeful of doing well.”

Euro-stars: “I’m worried about the Euro-stars. I’ve sold heifers to the south before and farmers were delighted with them, but now I have farmers coming checking stars and if they only have one or two stars there’s no sale. I had a bull in Eurogene and his stars dropped and then there was no interest in him at all.”

Brexit: “I’m wondering how trade will be affected north and south by Brexit, the trade in Limousins and the all-island health status and how that will work.”

Organ donation: “I’d encourage everyone to sign up to be an organ donor. Half the time you’d be thinking about it, but you never know when you or a loved one will need a transplant. I was constantly in and out of the hospital getting IV antibiotics and life’s totally changed for the better now.”
