From 18 October, bovine semen imported from Great Britain to Northern Ireland will be subject to new licensing arrangements.

A specific import licence for individuals and organisations importing semen is no longer needed.

However, an export health certificate is required for all imports.

“Bovine semen imports must also be accompanied by an export health certificate signed by an Official Veterinarian, appointed by the Animal Plant Health Agency (APHA) in GB,” The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) said.

A general import licence is also still required and the stipulations include:

  • All semen must be consigned initially to an approved semen storage premises or semen shop which is approved and licensed by the relevant authority in Great Britain.
  • The person in charge of the consignment must advise DAERA portal staff 24 hours prior to the intended date of import the means of transport they intend to use.
  • The importer must ensure that all documents relating to consignments are retained for at least 12 months from the date of importation.
