"The TAMS scheme has been extremely successful, with 12,500 approvals for Irish farmers to date. However, there remain almost 10,000 of these approvals unused to date and until these applicants submit their payment applications, I am not in a position to consider new investments or grant rates under the scheme," Minister Creed told the Dáil this week.

He was replying to a parliamentary question from Fianna Fáil agriculture spokesman Charlie McConalogue seeking an increase in the grant rate for low-emission slurry spreading equipment from 40% to 60%.

The IFA recently called for a 70% TAMS II grant aid on trailing shoes and similar machinery after new rules came into force banning splash plate slurry spreading from 15 June for farmers benefiting from the nitrates derogation.

There have also been suggestions that generators should be covered by TAMS II after successive storms left many dairy farmers unable to milk cows due to power cuts.
