Sparrow Solar has applied to Tipperary County Council for planning permission to develop a large-scale solar farm across lands at Lisheennamalausa, Ballyryan West, Gortdrum and Barnanalleen, Co Tipperary.

The proposed development would require approximately 160ac of land and would be located about five kilometres from Tipperary town and 1.5 kilometres from the village of Monard.

Plans submitted with the application show that the solar farm would consist of ground-mounted solar photovoltaic panels installed on steel support structures.

The development would also include 17 transformers, underground cabling, perimeter fencing with secure access gates and 43 closed-circuit television cameras mounted on poles.

The solar farm would have an operational capacity of up to 53.1 megawatt peak and is designed to operate for a period of 40 years from the date it becomes operational.

Tipperary County Council is expected to make a decision on the planning application by 20 April.
