A field of straw went up in flames Friday afternoon in what is believed locally to have been caused by a group of youths messing with fireworks.
A number of units from Cahir and Clonmel fire stations attended the scene of the fire just outside the village of Ardfinnan in south Tipperary.
In the region of 100 bales of straw worth €3,000 were destroyed in the blaze which took almost four hours to extinguish, according to a spokesperson for Tipperary Fire and Rescue Service in Clonmel.
The fire also caused significant damage to a roadside hedge in the field.
The farmer leasing the land told the Irish Farmers Journal that in order to avoid any issues next year he plans to chop the straw.
He explained how the bales were baled a couple of weeks but hadn't been collected yet and how about a week ago five bales had been rolled into the river.
In a statement to the Irish Farmers Journal, Gardaí said that they assisted fire services at the scene of a fire that occurred at 4:15pm on Friday.
A Garda spokesperson said that enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the fire.
