Aldi says it is ‘absorbing’ the cost of retail milk price cuts
President of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) Francie Gorman said the price war supermarkets are currently waging on milk could threaten Ireland’s liquid milk sector.
Since Friday 10 October, four major supermarkets have cut on-shelf milk price.

Discount supermarket Aldi has stated it is taking the hit on its price cut to on-shelf fresh milk.
“Aldi is absorbing the cost of these milk reductions as part of our continued strategy of shielding customers as much as possible from cost-of-living challenges,” an Aldi spokesperson told the Irish Farmers Journal.
Since Friday 10 October, four major supermarkets have cut on-shelf milk price. Lidl and Aldi reduced the cost of two litres to €2.35 from €2.45, with Tesco and Supervalu replicating the same for their own brand products. All of their other own-label milk prices have been cut, too. Lidl said: “Our retail price drop reflects already reported milk pricing reductions coming into effect in the coming months.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Tesco stated it has “invested to match own-label milk prices in the market”. Supervalu had not responded at the time of going to print.
This comes as president of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) Francie Gorman said this supermarket price war could threaten Ireland’s liquid milk sector.
