Athenry Co-operative Livestock Mart has launched legal proceedings against Asba Meats.

The case, which has been filed with the courts, relates to monies owed to the mart by Asba Meats, the Irish Farmers Journal understands.

Asba Meats is a halal meat processor with facilities at Shannon and at Drumquin, outside Ennis.

The firm has been involved in a number of legal proceedings in recent years, including a long-running legal wrangle with Town and Country Meats Group over the alleged non-payment of a debt of €16,931.

Debts

It is unclear what is owed by Asba Meats, if anything, to farmers. However, debts to some farmer-owned businesses are believed to be substantial.

A petition has been made to the High Court to wind up Asba Meats and was heard this week.
