Exports of breeding and store cattle along with sheep to Northern Ireland are due to resume in the coming days, the Irish Farmers Journal can reveal.

It is understood that talks with Northern Ireland officials are at an advanced stage on the matter and that draft wording for an EU derogation to allow the trade to fully reopen has been agreed with officials in Brussels.

Since bluetongue was detected on a farm in Co Wexford in January, the market has only been open for animals for direct slaughter.

Marts, exporters and NI farmers have been calling for the ban to be lifted. Calls fielded by exporters have ramped up in the last 24 hours, as northern buyers got wind of a return to cross-border trade.
