Construction has officially begun on Ireland’s largest agri-based anaerobic digestion plant. Tipperary-based Nephin Renewable Gas held a sod-turning ceremony this week at its first plant near Ballinrobe, Mayo, attended by its partners and Minister of State Alan Dillon.
Once operational, the Ballinrobe plant will process 90,000t of agricultural manures, slurries, commercial food waste, grass silage and wholecrop to produce biomethane gas, which will be injected into the national gas grid.
Nephin states that its plants will provide farmers with long-term, reliable income opportunities through feedstock supply while helping them lower their own emissions.
Gas purchase
Flogas has signed an offtake deal for the renewable gas, along with gas from Nephin’s next two plants. The offtake deal is the first of its kind and the largest to date in Ireland, Nephin states. The three plants will produce enough gas to heat over 38,000 homes.
The Ballinrobe facility will be the first to come on stream in 2027, with details of the two further plants to be announced later this year.
