The increasing demand for premium dairy products will drive stronger market returns in the longer term, according to Dairygold CEO Michael Harte.

This demand, he said, is being propelled by health and nutrition trends, a growing world population and rising per-capita income.

However, Harte said that he anticipates that volatility and uncertainty will persist.

Harte was speaking on Thursday at Derval and Aidan Kennedy’s farm in Cahir, Co Tipperary, who were winners of the 2024 NDC and Kerrygold Quality Milk Awards.

“2025 to date has been a good year for dairy farmers, with favourable weather and positive market returns,” Harte said.

“Historically dairy markets undergo cycles of high and low prices driven by supply-demand imbalance.

“Nonetheless, long-term fundamentals remain positive, with global milk supply constraints emerging as sustainability targets are met,” he said.

Retaining the nitrates derogation is “top priority” for Dairygold according to Harte, while also recognising that emissions reduction is “essential for the industry’s long-term sustainability”.
