The Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon has said that the Department of Agriculture is ready to assess and approve vessels that might be made available for transport of livestock out of Ireland.

It follows Brittany Ferries’ decision to cease live exports on its Rosslare-Cherbourg route from September, a key transit route for Irish calves headed to the continent for rearing.

A spokesperson for the Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon said it is with regret that his Department received the notification of Brittany Ferries’ decision.

“They explained that their decision was based on operational issues and understood and deeply regretted the impact that this decision would have on Irish farmers and transporters,” the spokesperson said.

The transport of live animals is a private commercial activity which is regulated by the Department in accordance with EU and national laws.

While this trade is a private commercial activity, the Department, on Minister Heydon’s request, has requested a meeting with Brittany Ferries’ to discuss this decision and explore whether there are any other options.

Up to 26 July 2026 some 225,000 bovines were exported, according to figures published by the Department.

“I am keenly aware of the vital role that live exports play in stimulating price competition and providing an alternative market outlet for farmers,” the Minister said.

The Department reiterated that Ireland demands the highest standards of animal welfare at every stage of the animal’s life, including during transport.

Irish Ferries

Irish Ferries has no plans to end its live exports, as it will stand as the last shipper facilitating the live export of calves.

“Irish Ferries is not currently commenting on reports relating to Brittany Ferries’ live animal export plans,” a spokesperson for Irish Ferries told the Irish Farmers Journal.

“There are no changes to Irish Ferries’ freight services.”

A public meeting is to be held in Athlone on Saturday evening hosted by MEP Ciarán Mullooly and Independent Ireland agriculture spokesperson Michael Fitzmaurice to discuss the ceasing of live exports by Brittany Ferries.
