Saturday saw Macroom Mart raise €15,000 in a charity auction to support a young farm incident survivor from Beara, Co Cork.
The proceeds from the sale of a show bullock and a heifer calf went to support the recovery of Féile O’Sullivan, a 13-year-old who sustained life-altering injuries in a farm incident this summer.
Macroom Mart described bidding during the atmosphere during auction as “electric” as it hailed attendees’ “tremendous outpouring of generosity and goodwill”.
The bullock, donated by Dunmanway farmers Daniel Power and Edwina Patterson, fetched €12,000.
It was snapped up by ABP Bandon’s Padraig Twomey to “great applause from the packed ring” when the hammer fell.
A heifer calf donated by Jerome Coakley brought in a further €3,000 in aid, having been bought collectively by the friends and staff of Macroom Mart.
“The support we witnessed was truly overwhelming,” the mart team commented after the sale.
“From those who donated animals, to buyers, bidders, volunteers and everyone who came through the gates, we can’t thank you enough.
“It was a day that showed the very best of our farming community and we were delighted to play our part.”
The mart stated that the success of the charity auction, which ran in conjunction with its weanling show and sale and special suckler sale, serves as a reminder of “how rural Ireland rallies around its own in times of need”.
