The European Commission has approved a €41m Greek state aid scheme for agricultural companies facing increased fertiliser prices due to the Middle East crisis.

The scheme, which aims to lessen the impact of increased fertiliser prices, will come in the form of direct grants.

The aid covers 15% of the total cost of fertiliser purchased from 15 March 2026 until 31 August 2026. The aid is capped at €50,000 per beneficiary.

The scheme will be available to companies active in the primary production of agricultural products.

The Commission said that the scheme is necessary to support the development of the sector and would not negatively affect trading conditions.

METSAF

The scheme was approved under the Middle East crisis temporary state aid framework (METSAF), which was adopted by the Commission in April 2026 to allow member states to support sectors affected by the crisis.

METSAF applies to sectors including agriculture, fisheries and transport and will remain in place until 31 December 2026.
