Plans have been revealed for what is set to become Europe’s largest solar farm.
The 2,600ac solar development, known as Dama Solar, is being spearheaded by Rezolv Energy in Arad County in north-west Romania, near the border with Hungary.
The 1.24 gigawatt solar farm has now reached the final stage of development, with preparations for construction under way.
Capacity to connect the project to the grid close to the site has also been confirmed. The development is located close to Romania’s 400 kV transmission ring and electricity interconnection points with Hungary.
When operational, the solar farm is expected to generate enough electricity annually to match the consumption of more than 280,000 households, representing almost one million people.
The electricity will be supplied to commercial and industrial customers under long-term Power Purchase Agreements.
The development is also expected to support employment, with more than 500 new jobs set to be created over the next three years.
Plans for the site extend beyond electricity generation, with areas currently classified as low-quality agricultural land to be converted back into pasture, where sheep will graze to keep vegetation under control.
A 202ac nature reserve will also form part of the development. The initiative is described as one of the largest privately led nature restoration projects connected to a solar development in Southeastern Europe.
