The veterinary certificate just agreed by the Egyptian and Irish authorities for weanling cattle runs along expected lines, according to exporters, and it will facilitate trade.
However, exporters see the relatively weak state of the Egyptian economy as a block on orders for now. Exporters contacted by the Irish Farmers Journal this week report they are not yet receiving enquiries from Egyptian buyers.
It is understood that one prominent Irish exporter is currently in Cairo.
Financial aid
Egypt has received significant financial aid from neighbouring states Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates over the past five years.
Further aid would encourage importing of livestock and beef.
Eligible cattle must be under 12 months, male and weigh at least 225kg. The cert does not specify particular breeds, although Egyptian buyers prefer continental-type cattle.
The cert states that cattle must be resident on the farm of origin for 21 days and separated from other animals.
Examination
Examination of the animals during this residency will be in cooperation with the Egyptian veterinary delegation.
This may allow quarantine to be completed on the farm. Cattle must be free of disease, vaccinated for IBR and 30-day tested for TB.
