Irish diesel and petrol prices are set to increase again due to changes in biofuel blending rates for road transport fuels, which came into effect on 1 January 2026.

According to Fuels for Ireland, petrol and diesel prices could rise by 4-6c/l. The organisation states that increases in carbon tax, renewable fuel obligations, and energy efficiency levies have steadily driven up prices.

Over five years, these measures will have added about €19 to the cost of filling a typical 60-litre tank, including the additional rise in 2026.

Out of touch

The Irish Road Haulage Association says motorists are now paying about €5 more to fill a tank than a year ago. It warns that rising fuel taxes, tolls, and levies are forcing drivers off the roads, particularly in rural Ireland, with severe impacts on small family businesses.

IRHA president Ger Hyland said the Government is out of touch with the cost pressures facing rural Ireland, claiming Ireland now has the highest diesel prices in the EU.
