Farmers will be able to get €5,000 for old jeeps as part of a new scrappage scheme being introduced by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, the Irish Farmers Journal understands. The new €10m pilot electric vehicle (EV) scrappage scheme aims to incentivise owners of older diesel and petrol vehicles to permanently scrap them and to put the scrappage value towards the purchase of a battery EV instead.

Under the scheme, the vehicle must be more than 13 years old to receive the incentive of €5,000.

To target the funding to areas with poorer public transport, 65% of the funding will be ringfenced for people living outside the major cities of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.
