Grass production in 2025 is up 12% on the same time last year, according to Teagasc’s Caitlin Looney.

“Overall dry matter production is up 1.4t DM/ha to a total of 12.4t DM/ha in 2025 versus the same time in 2024. This is also an increase of 6% on the five-year average production figures,” she said.

The dramatic increase comes on the back of an excellent growing year.

In terms of the current situation on farms, growth rates are back to 32kg DM/ha, with predicted growth for next week below 20kg DM/ha, according to PastureBase. Wet weather, colder temperatures and shorter days are the reason for the predicted drop. Met Éireann data is showing that current soil temperatures are on average 9°C, down three degrees in just two weeks. Soils across the country are also now at saturation point, with a soil moisture deficit (SMD) of zero or below in most areas.

With farms well into their final grazing rotation at this stage, the end of the grazing season is now in sight. The autumn targets at the start of November for percentage area of the farm closed are 60% on drier farms and closer to 75% on heavy land types.

The target for average farm covers this week in the country is 700-900kg DM/ha. Exactly 40% of farms are on target, with 40% of farms below target and 20% of farms above this target, according to Teagasc.
