Immediate remedial action to a dangerous stretch of road in a busy farming area in south Kilkenny is being called for by residents of Glenmore. A public meeting this week will highlight local concerns.
The road in question is a stretch of the N25, linking New Ross to Waterford city. While only 6.2km long, it has seen a high proportion of serious accidents in recent years and is described as a "death trap" by locals.
Extending between two dual carriageways, linking the New Ross bypass and Rose Kennedy Bridge to the Waterford city bypass, it is a single carraigeway with climbing lanes.
'Enough'
"As residents of Glenmore, we have had enough of fatal and serious injury accidents on our stretch of roadway," say the organisers.
"There have been 12 fatal accidents in the past 20 years, with seven of those in the last decade. Three of those who lost their lives are from Glenmore."
Since Brexit, traffic through Rosslare Europort has increased by up to 400%, as much as half of it taking the N25 through Glenmore.
Almost 18,000 vehicles, many of them lorries and foreign cars, passed in one 24-hour period on 30 May last.
A lot of tractors and livestock hauliers use this road. Two significant agri-machinery dealers are on the road. A planned road upgrade had its funding pulled in 2022.
The meeting takes place in the Rhu Glenn Hotel on Monday 16 June at 8pm.
