Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon has warned that farm payments outside of those paid to young farmers would need to be cut to fund a succession scheme.

Speaking about the Commission on Generational Renewal’s recommendation to divert 8% of Ireland’s total direct payments envelope to young farmers, the minister said that moving from 3% to 8% dedicated to young farmers is a very ambitious target.

“People do need to recognise that if it’s not a bigger CAP, they will see money come off other areas and where will that come from?”

He said that there needs to be a conversation around funding a succession scheme against a shrinking CAP budget.
