The sustainability village at this year's Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show is set to be powered by green hydrogen.
The event, which takes place on 10 August, will see a collaboration between Offaly County Council, the ESB and the Tullamore Show committee to use emission-free hydrogen fuel cells to power the village.
Two hydrogen power units (HPUs), developed by GeoPura in partnership with Siemens Energy, will be showcased at the event.
The units work by converting hydrogen, generated from renewable electricity, into electricity with water as the only by-product.
Power
The HPU is essentially a generator powered by hydrogen in a 20-foot shipping container.
Typically, it gives 100kW of power or 80kW of continuous load. It provides three-phase 400v power.
One unit will replace diesel generators to power the sustainability village, while the second will be available to the public.
“This is a bold and practical demonstration of what the future of energy looks like,” commented Offaly County Council senior engineer Mark Mahon. “It’s clean, quiet, renewable and, most importantly, zero emission[s] energy.”
