The IFA has renewed its call for Larry Murin to be removed from his position as chair of Bord Bia, over his company Dawn Farm Foods’ importation of Brazilian beef in 2025.

On Wednesday, members of the IFA’s national council and farm family committee handed in a letter to Bord Bia addressed to Murrin. The farm organisation said that his position remains untenable and called on him to clarify if his company Dawn Farm Foods continued to import Brazilian meat after the European Commission flagged the ban on Brazilian beef imports in May.

The ban came into effect on 3 September. IFA president Francie Gorman said: “Now that the European Commission has vindicated IFA’s position on Brazilian meat, we believe that his position is even more untenable. In the interests of Bord Bia, we are asking that he steps down as chair of Bord Bia.”

When queried by the Irish Farmers Journal on whether Dawn Farm Foods had imported any Brazilian beef this year, a spokesperson said: “The company’s policy is not to guide or comment on commercial issues”.

The IFA also delivered a letter to the Department of Health, requesting that Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill direct the Food Safety Authority of Ireland to instigate a recall of all Brazilian meat that was imported since May.

A final letter was delivered to Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon, calling for a recall of any Brazilian beef imported since May and for a new chair of Bord Bia to be put in place.
