Ornua is examining misinformation circulating online about its Kerrygold brand.
Among the claims from US social media accounts include that the butter is “just reprocessed corn and soy”.
“We are aware of recent misinformation circulating online about Kerrygold,” an Ornua spokesperson said.
“While open discussion is welcome, the spread of misleading or inaccurate claims to do with our products is something we take very seriously.
“Our brand is built on trust, transparency, and the exceptional quality of Irish grass-fed dairy. Behind that quality are hardworking Irish dairy farmers whose dedication and commitment to upholding the highest standards in grass-fed dairy farming deserve to be fairly represented,” the Kerrygold maker said.
Ornua added that it will continue “to represent and champion what our farmer suppliers do and address inaccurate claims”.
On the Kerrygold website, Ornua has published a notice for consumers on the matter.
“You may have seen misleading claims online about Kerrygold that are confusing or concerning. We understand why that might raise questions.
“We believe the best way to build a relationship of trust with you is through transparency and accurate information. That is why we share clear, verified details about our products directly,” it states.
Feed
Ornua has said that a typical Irish cow’s grass-based diet also includes a small amount of supplementary feed.
“This is used to give the cows a healthy and balanced blend of nutrients, providing them with protein, energy, fibre and micronutrients,” it said.
It also adds that Ornua is a verified member of Bord Bia’s Origin Green food and drink sustainability programme, which is underpinned by the Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme (SDAS).
Responding to other online claims which have questioned the colour of Kerrygold in recent weeks, Ornua said it has not changed its recipe or how it makes Kerrygold.
“The only ingredients (for our salted butter) are cream and salt.”
Kerrygold is the number two butter brand in the US.
