An investigation is under way in Co Cavan by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) following an incident at Ballinagh river, where over 1,000 fish have died.

IFI was made aware of the incident by a member of the public on Sunday 13 July.

IFI staff have identified a number of species such as brown trout, stickleback, minnow and roach. These species were found deceased along a one kilometre stretch of the river.

There have been water samples taken from the scene and a definite line of enquiry is being followed into the suspected source of the pollution, according to the IFI.

Dead fish found floating after an investigation into a fish kill at Ballinagh river, Co Cavan.

“High temperatures and low flow conditions do not appear to be the primary cause of this incident,” according to director of the IFI’s northwestern river basin district Dr Milton Matthews.

IFI continues to appeal to people to report instances of fish kills or suspected water pollution to its 24-hour confidential phone line on 0818 34 74 24.

Separately, there was a fish kill on the Ballybrack stream near Douglas village in Co Cork last week. There was at least 1,500 dead, primarily brown trout and European eels.
