The Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) has said that Irish Ferries has confirmed that it will continue to carry live animals to the European continent for the foreseeable future.
The IFA met with the company on Friday morning.
Following the decision of Brittany Ferries to no longer carry live animals, Irish Ferries is the only roll-on, roll-off carrier transporting animals to the continent.
The IFA said that there were also other challenges to live exports in the courts and in Brussels, which it is working on.
The High Court has accepted an application by the IFA to be an official notice party in the judicial review taken by Ethical Farming Ireland against the Department of Agriculture. The judicial review seeks to effectively stop live exports of animals from Ireland.
The IFA said it has made significant submissions to the court and the case has now been referred for High Court mediation.
Separately, there are EU proposals on animal transport regulations which could make the export of animals from Ireland impractical, the farm organisation said.
