Killeen Farmhouse Cheese has achieved what many Irish people dream of – they have beaten the Brits at their own game and they’ve done it with goats.

The Co Galway cheesemaker scooped the supreme champion prize at the British and Irish Artisan Cheese Awards with a gouda-style cheese made with goat’s milk and aged longer than it feels to receive a TAMS grant.

Judge Matthew O’Callaghan said it was one of the best cheeses he’d tasted in 70 years, strong praise from a man who’s been eating a whole lot of cheese for his life. The goats around Portumna are walking a little taller this week.
