There’s something about September that feels like a fresh start. The evenings are getting shorter, summer is winding down and, after a busy few months, it can feel like the perfect time to get back into a routine or try something completely new before winter arrives.

Macra is a nationwide organisation for young people aged 17 to 35, with clubs across rural Ireland. While farming and agriculture are a big part of the organisation, there is a lot more going on than you might expect. The Macra calendar is packed with opportunities to get involved, particularly as we head into a new season of activities.

There are agricultural competitions, farm walks and young farmer discussion groups, alongside sport, drama, debating, public-speaking and plenty of social events. Clubs organise everything from quizzes and nights out to fundraising events, trips and community activities.

Competitive, but fun

If competition is your thing, there is certainly no shortage of it. Over the course of the year, members can take part in everything from farm skills, stock judging and poc fáda to volleyball, tag rugby, drama and impromptu debating. You can take it seriously, give something a go for the first time, or simply get involved for the craic.

For anyone looking to pick up a few new skills, Macra also offers training and development opportunities and discounted courses through Macra Agricultural Skillnet, while involvement in clubs and committees can provide plenty of opportunities to build confidence, leadership and organisational skills along the way.

And there will be plenty of social occasions over the coming months too.

You might pop in to see Macra at the ploughing, pick up some tips and tricks at its National Training Day, cheer on its top leaders and volunteers, or even take a spin to Limerick for the rally. That’s just the beginning.
