Bio-waste processor College Proteins has signed a new deal with energy supplier Flogas to supply biomethane from its newly built anaerobic digestion (AD) plant at its Nobber, Co Meath, site.
Under the gas purchase agreement, Flogas will purchase 26 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of biomethane produced at the AD plant, which uses animal by-products and agri-food waste as feedstock.
The facility is located on the College Proteins site and is directly connected to the national gas grid.
Flogas, part of DCC Energy plc, will supply the biomethane to the transport sector.
The AD plant has a total production capacity of 75GWh per annum, with the renewable gas primarily supporting the decarbonisation of Ireland's transport sector.
The supply is expected to deliver annual carbon savings of approximately 6,637 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to removing around 114 heavy goods vehicles from Irish roads each year.
Cross-border opportunities
Flogas has said that it is also exploring opportunities to expand its renewable gas supply, including ongoing discussions with a food producer in Northern Ireland regarding a potential long-term supply agreement for biomethane sourced from the College Proteins facility.
