Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher has said virtual fencing technology should be included as an eligible technology under the Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Scheme (TAMS).

“The inclusion of virtual fencing technology as an eligible technology under TAMS could be a game changer for farming, but particularly for upland sheep and goat farming in Ireland,” he said.

His comments come after several sheep farmers in upland areas contacted him. They are keen to invest in virtual fencing technology, but cannot receive support under TAMS.

He explained that virtual fencing means the maintenance of animals within or outside of specifies areas, using GPS locational devices, such as collars, as opposed to using physical fencing.

Benefits

“I see great benefits in terms of targeted grazing by sheep in our upland hills and mountains.”

Kelleher said he has written to Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon asking him to investigate the inclusion of virtual fencing technology on TAMS.

“There would, of course, be obligations such as undergoing approved training in how to use this technology safely and appropriately. However, I think the benefits vastly outweigh the additional responsibilities,” Kelleher said.
