I farm: “About 70ac in total. I have a suckler beef herd of 25 cows. I breed pedigree Aubrac cattle. They’re going good for me.”

Breeding: “I’ve used a stock bull over the last year or two but I was using AI. I was doing the AI myself. I’ll probably go back to using AI next year. I was using bulls like Dauphin and Dolby in the past.”

Beef price: “It’s good at the minute, we’re hoping it’ll stick but I don’t know. The world market is good currently, so the price of beef around the world is good. Hopefully, it’ll stay up there for us as well.”

Silage: “I have first-cut silage made and I have arable silage to come in this week. The quality of the first-cut silage was good. The quality of the arable silage should be good if we get the weather to take it. I have barley, peas and grass mix clover. It was sown 12 weeks ago. My dad made arable silage 40 years ago so this is the first time making it on the farm in 40 years.”

Stock: “I sell off pedigree heifers and they go on for breeding. Most of my bulls go for breeding as well. I’ll start selling a few of the heifers in September. I have three pedigree Aubrac bulls in AI stations. I have Turloughmore Magnificent and Turloughmore Nelson with Progressive Genetics. I also have Turloughmore Majestic with Eurogene.”

Organics: “I’m in organics, this is my third year into it. I’ve adjusted OK, you just have to adjust your stocking rate to start with and you have to get more used to walking the fields.”

Future plans: “I’ve no plans at the minute, I’m going with the flow for the time being. I’ll stick with the Aubracs and the suckler herd.”
