I farm: “120 acres in Dunmore, Co Galway. I farm part-time. I also work as a plumbing contractor. It’s just myself on the farm and I have a few local lads that would help me when I need it. My daughter Eshia would give me a hand sometimes too, she has a Connemara pony here on the farm as well.”

Cows: “I have around 50 suckler cows. I have a mixed suckler herd with a few purebred Limousin cows. About two thirds of the cows are purebred. The main breeds in my suckler herd I tend to go for are Limousin or Limousin cross, and there’s a few other breeds there too.”

Triplets: “It was a commercial cross-bred cow, she was one of four cows I bought from my father Gerry when he was getting out of cows, and it was one of them that had triplets. This is the cow’s fifth round of calves, she had single calves in the first two years, then she had a set of twins. She had another single last year and the triplets this year.”

Stock: “I sell purebred bulls and heifers from the farm mainly. I will go to the mart with some of the calves as weanlings if I think they won’t make the cut as a purebred.”

Breeding: “I use mostly AI, and I have an Ampertaine Foreman-sired stock bull on the farm. When I use AI, I use Limousin and Belgian Blue straws. I use the Belgian Blues on some of the plainer Limousin cows. I stick with the Limousin straws with the better Limousin cows I have.”

Silage: “We got our second-cut done there last week, happy with it. The weather cleared up enough to get it in. I got the first-cut done in comfort with the good weather we had at the time.”
