Sheep: “Myself and my dad Tom have about 250 sheep in total. My partner Avril is fairly hands-on too with the farming; we are getting married in August.”

Pedigrees: “We have pedigree Texels and Suffolks, the Suffolks lamb from the first week of January and the Texels start the first week of February.”

Last weekend: “The Texel all-Ireland championship was on at the Athlone Show. We took fifth in the hogget ram class, fifth in the shearling ewe and first for our ram lamb, Kenny’s Jackpot, in the open class. He went on to win male overall champion and overall interbreed champion of the show. To win the all-Ireland and to do it in our own region, it was a sweet moment for myself and dad.”

Suffolks: “We went to Dundalk for the Suffolk all-Ireland a couple weeks ago. We had three ET sisters in the novice ewe lamb class and they took first, second and third and two of them took first and fifth in the open class. The ram lambs took first and second in the novice class. We had overall and reserve female champion as well as the overall champion and reserve champion. It was unbelievable, every sheep we had out that day took away a ribbon in their class.”

This week: “We have the west of Ireland Texel club championships and the Suffolk west region championship both on Sunday. This Friday we have our online starter summer sale through Roscommon Mart from 7pm Friday evening until 9pm Sunday. We’re having an open day on the farm on Saturday from 12pm to 4pm for people to come see the sheep selling online.”

Sales: “Once we get this weekend over us, we will be focusing on the Texel premier sale on 22 July and the Suffolk premier sale on 14 August. I work with Avara Landscapes and they’re very understanding and flexible with the showing.”

Beef: “I get calves from Avril’s dad PJ who is a dairy farmer. We bought 36 calves this year, a mix of Angus and whiteheads, bulls and heifers. They’re out on grass about seven weeks now on 2kg of meal per day. We might sell a handful as runners and put the rest into the shed for the winter.”

Sheepdogs: “I breed some sheepdogs too, I have a dog called Mack, he is out of the world-record price bitch Kim from the UK. I breed him with my own bitch Tess. They’re a crucial part of the farm, if we didn’t have them, I don’t think we’d still be at it.”
