A lack of real-world experience was cited as a concern in 78% of recent and soon-to-be graduates’ ability to get a job, new findings from the Bord Bia Talent Academy report shows.

The report, which analysed results from over 500 respondents to a survey, highlights an “entry level paradox”, the belief shared by 84% of respondents that it’s impossible to get experience without a job and impossible to get a job without experience.

The sheer volume of career choices has 78% of respondents feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to begin.

Falling behind

Seven in 10 outlined that they feel like they’re “falling behind” when they see peers announcing jobs on social media, adding emotional pressure that’s shaping early career decisions.

In addition, 37% express a desire to continue their studies into postgraduate level, but 59% say postgraduate study feels financially out of reach.

The most valued feature for respondents designing their ideal first step after college is 'it pays a real salary'. Financial stability was followed closely by ‘long-term career opportunities’ and ‘guaranteed placement with a real company’.

The survey was conducted in late August and respondents are currently enrolled in third-level and postgraduate education, have graduated in the last two years or are in either their first or second job since graduating.

Bord Bia graduate programme

The findings come as the Bord Bia Talent Academy welcomes applications for its September 2027 intake of the international graduate programme.

The programme is a fully funded masters in global business practice with national and international placements in the food, drink and horticulture industry across the Bord Bia global network.

Industry talent manager at Bord Bia Karen Connaughton said: “With a 95% employment rate, the Bord Bia Talent Academy has become a proven pathway for graduates who are looking for real career momentum.

"The new research shows young people want financial stability, practical experience and a clear route into industry and that’s exactly what the international graduate programme delivers.

"The programme offers students a fully funded masters while they gain structured, national and international real-world learning that builds confidence, capability and long-term prospects in one of Ireland’s most important sectors.”
