A new agricultural anaerobic digestion (AD) plant has been proposed Annaholty, south Tipperary.

Plans for the Annaholty Green Energy’s project were submitted to Tipperary County Council earlier this month.

Annaholty Green Energy is a sister company of GreenGas AD Plant, Ireland’s first commercial- scale anaerobic digestion plant. GreenGas has been operating since 2010, in Shanagolden, Limerick.

The proposed AD plant will produce biomethane for direct injection into the national gas grid.

Agri feedstock

The plant will require around 50,000t of feedstock per year consisting of 8,000–10,000t farmyard slurries and manures, 1,000–2,100t poultry litter, 15,000–19,900t maize silage, and 15,000–18,000t grass silage.

The developer states that the facility will create new income streams for local farmers by sourcing sustainable feedstock from the surrounding area.

The project will have the capacity to generate up to 40 GWh of renewable gas each year, enough to supply approximately 3,200 homes.

Facility

The project involves the construction of two primary anaerobic digesters, a secondary storage digester operating at 38oC, and a digestate storage tank. It will also include two manure reception tanks, a desulphurisation unit, pasteurisation and cooling tanks, and other supporting facilities.

The plan also includes a pump room with air filtration, a mixing tank, and a rainwater harvesting system, along with offices, workshops, and a two-storey administrative building.

The facility be licensed and regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The covered clamps will be 64m x 25.8m x 5m each. Each silage clamp will have a working capacity of 8,000m3 and a total storage capacity of 40,000 tonnes.
