The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has revealed that it has no plans to introduce a mandatory training programme at the moment for tractor drivers.
While there is currently a category W driving test in Ireland which covers tractor tests, volumes are very low from an applicant perspective, the RSA confirmed, with approximately 20 applications so far in 2026 and an estimated 16 completed.
When an applicant passes their category B (car) test, they are also licenced for a category W (tractor).
A person must be 16 years of age and hold a learner permit or a full category W driving licence in order to drive a tractor in a public place.
In June of last year, the Irish Farmers Journal revealed that the RSA was considering introducing a tractor driving test.
The RSA has said that, alongside a driving test, a mandatory training programme could also come into play from 2027 onwards.
