The Irish grass-fed dairy model is at risk from output being moved into lower margin products, Conor Galvin, CEO of Ornua, will tell the annual ASA conference on Thursday morning. In his address to the session, titled “securing our strength”, Galvin's focus is on the importance of protecting Ireland’s grass-fed reputation.
As well as the threat from the move away from premium products, he recognises the risks from moving away from the grass-fed system. He will tell the conference that this may result in higher costs, lower market returns and a drift towards commodity pricing.
He will also outline Ornua’s plans on how it will further strengthen its partnership with member co-operatives to enable stronger returns, while protecting the premium position Irish farmers have spent generations building.
